Japan records its highest number of cannabis investigations

Police investigated a record 6,832 people for cannabis offences in 2025, 754 more than the year before, the National Police Agency said on 2 April 2026.[1] About 700 were pursued under the new offence of use, and 1,373 were under 20, the highest since 1990.[1] More than 40% of those under 30 said they had bought cannabis through apps such as X and Telegram, and police seized 315 kg of concentrates, more than three times the 2024 figure.[1]
