Afghanistan's new penal code takes over drug crimes

Afghanistan's new Penal Code came into force on 14 February 2018 with a chapter on narcotics trafficking. It raised some hashish sentences above the 2010 drug law: trafficking 100–500 g of charas carried six months to a year, where the 2010 law had set two to three months. Ten days later a new counter-narcotics law was issued with even harsher drug penalties, but the government repealed its criminal provisions in March to keep the Penal Code as the criminal law.[1]
