The first joint UN and Afghan cannabis survey estimated that the 2009 crop produced 1,500–3,500 tonnes of cannabis resin, making Afghanistan the world's largest hashish producer. It estimated 10,000–24,000 hectares under cannabis, with high resin yields helping explain the scale of production. Farmers most often cited high prices and low cultivation costs as reasons for growing the crop.[1]
