The US Supreme Court strikes down the Marihuana Tax Act
In Leary v. United States the court ruled that the 1937 tax law, the basis of federal prohibition, forced people to incriminate themselves. State laws still banned cannabis, and Congress replaced the tax act with the Controlled Substances Act the following year.
