Lee Otis Johnson, a Houston civil-rights organiser, handed a single marijuana cigarette to an undercover police officer. Texas law counted the handover as a sale, and a Houston jury gave him 30 years in prison. "Free Lee Otis" became a rallying cry on campuses across the state. He was freed in 1972, after a federal judge ruled that he should not have been tried in Houston, where feeling about the case ran high.[1][2]
