At a special session of the General Assembly in New York from 8 to 10 June, governments adopted a political declaration promising to reduce the supply of and demand for illicit drugs substantially by 2008, and to eliminate or significantly reduce crops of opium poppy, coca and cannabis. A briefing published a week later called the session a lost opportunity, because existing policy was not evaluated at all.[1]
