Personal drug possession becomes a crime across Soviet Moldavia

Following an all-union decree of 25 April 1974 on combating drug addiction, the Moldavian SSR amended its criminal code to punish acquiring or keeping narcotics without intent to sell with up to three years in prison or two years of corrective labour.[1][2] Repeat offences brought up to five years. For the first time, individuals caught holding cannabis solely for their own consumption faced criminal imprisonment across the territory.[1][2]
