Tightening 🇿🇦 South Africa

South Africa raises the fines and prison terms for dagga

Amendments raised the maximum punishment for a dagga offence from a fine of £100, six months in prison or both, to a fine of £500 and twelve months. The change came as police, following a 1952 government report, turned their attention from users to suppliers and arrests reached their highest level of the decade. The law then stayed much the same until the far harsher Act of 1971.[1]
