The first licensed crop, grown on less than 300 hectares in the three Rif provinces, produced 296 tonnes of dried cannabis in 2023. All the seed had been imported from Europe, and heatwaves of 47–49°C cut germination and yields; the regulator estimated a 20% loss. Farmers in the scheme were paid about 75 dirhams a kilogram for legal green cannabis, against 10–20 dirhams on the illegal market. The harvest was small next to the country's illicit output.[1]
