Mauritania voted against the UN General Assembly resolution calling for a moratorium on executions, moving from abstention in 2022 to opposition. The vote did not change the domestic law, which still provides death for repeat or aggravated high-risk drug offences, but it ended the country's long abstention and led ECPM to class it as retentionist. No execution has been carried out since 1987.[1][2]
