A former president's sons are jailed over 1.3 tonnes of cannabis

A Nouakchott criminal court sentenced Sidi Mohamed Ould Haidalla to 15 years and his brother Ely Cheikh to four years for their part in trafficking 1.3 tonnes of Indian hemp seized in January 2016. Two other defendants received 11 and 10 years and nine were acquitted; the appeal court confirmed the convictions in September and raised Ely Cheikh's term to a six-year suspended sentence. The case put a former president's family on trial and showed the courts handing down the 15-year term for high-risk trafficking rather than the death penalty.[1]
