The Criminal Code of the Kirghiz SSR, adopted on 29 December 1960, came into force on 1 May 1961 as the republic's first national criminal code. It punished illegal manufacture, acquisition, storage or transport of narcotic drugs with up to three years, while sale and aggravated cases could bring six to fifteen years and confiscation. Growing the banned southern Chuy and other hemp varieties carried up to five years, and running a drug den five to ten years. The code stayed in force after independence and was repealed only on 1 January 1998.[1]
