BNN said in June 2025 that selected universities with accredited laboratories, including the University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada and Bandung Institute of Technology, could research medical cannabis, with BNN as the national laboratory. It insisted the opening was not legalisation. BNN and Udayana University had begun a pharmacy study earlier in 2025; the research did not change the ban on medical use.[1][2]
