On 20 August 2026 the government proposed removing the death penalty from six offences, including illegal drug trafficking, and keeping it for four, including illegal drug production. The National Assembly's Standing Committee reviewed the plan in September and deputies debated it on 27 October, splitting over whether trafficking should stay capital. As of 27 October no vote had been taken. If passed, selling 30 kg or more of cannabis resin, or 150 kg or more of the listed plant parts, would carry life imprisonment at most, while producing narcotics would remain a capital offence.[1][2]
