About 600,000 hectares of hemp stand across the Soviet Union in 1940, grown for rope, string and rough cloth. Soviet Ukraine is one of the largest producers, still working over 150,000 hectares until the 1950s; almost none of it is smoked. The sown area then shrinks for decades, below 100,000 hectares by 1986.[1][2]
