A UN mission maps the hashish road through Syria

A United Nations survey team spent September and October 1959 in the Middle East, including the Syrian province of the United Arab Republic, and found that hashish moved by land through Syria to Jordan, Israel and Egypt. It reported substantial hashish production and consumption across the region and said it had been told of no concrete plan to end cultivation in neighbouring Lebanon. The mission's report, adopted on 20 October 1959, recommended exemplary penalties for traffickers and closer cross-border police work.[1]
