The UN Human Rights Committee finds no breach in South Africa's refusal of a Rastafari exemption

Gareth Prince argued that South Africa violated his freedom of religion, his equality before the law and the rights of a religious minority by refusing Rastafarians any exemption from the ban on possessing and using cannabis. The committee accepted that cannabis is an essential part of the religion but found the ban justified: an exemption would need a system of importing and distributing cannabis that could leak into general circulation. It found no breach of the Covenant.[1]
