Sri Lanka certifies a law on voluntary and compulsory drug treatment

Act 54 of 2007 provided for designated and licensed treatment centres, voluntary admission, and compulsory admission following medical assessment and a magistrate's order. It also allowed convicted drug-dependent people to be transferred for treatment, which a court could count towards a sentence. Certification on 13 November was an enactment milestone: section 1 left commencement to a later ministerial Gazette order. The act concerned drug dependence generally, not permission to use cannabis.[1]
