Sierra Leone acceded to the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961 as amended by the 1972 Protocol on 6 June 1994. The convention lists cannabis and cannabis resin among its controlled drugs and obliges its parties to limit their production, trade, possession and use to medical and scientific purposes. On the same day it ratified the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of 1988. Article 3 of the 1988 convention requires each party, subject to its constitutional principles, to make the possession, purchase and cultivation of drugs for personal consumption a criminal offence.[1][2]
