Malaysian study urges ending the death penalty for drug offences

A policy brief launched in Parliament by the Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network, Monash University Malaysia and Eleos Justice called for the death penalty to be abolished for drug offences. It reported that 97 people remained on death row in November 2025 and that drug offences accounted for 21% of them. The brief drew on five focus groups held between May and July 2026 with 31 participants and argued that public opinion had shifted away from capital punishment for trafficking.[1]
