Malaysia widens drug treatment law but leaves the Dangerous Drugs Act intact

The Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted on 17 October 2024 and reported in force on 1 August 2025. It extends the treatment and rehabilitation regime from drug dependants to drug or substance dependants and misusers, and allows courts to order community or centre-based treatment. It does not repeal sections 6 or 15 of the Dangerous Drugs Act, so possession and consumption remain criminal.[1][2]
