The Basra criminal court sentenced a man to death under Article 27(1) of the 2017 drug law after large quantities of methamphetamine and hashish were found in his possession for sale. The Supreme Judicial Council announced the judgment on 27 October 2026. Article 27(1) is one of the law's trafficking provisions and carries death or life imprisonment.[1]
