Iran says drug-law amendment would cut capital offences from eight to two

The secretary of Iran's Drug Control Headquarters said on 30 June 2026 that an amendment to the anti-narcotics law, agreed with the judiciary and police, would reduce the number of capital drug offences from eight to two. Days earlier the same official said the change was still a proposal, that abolishing the death penalty was not on the agenda and that it would not apply until parliament passed it. No text was published with either account.[1][2]
