Independent Indonesia passes its first narcotics law
Law 9 replaced the Dutch colonial ordinance while keeping cannabis restricted to medical and scientific purposes. It raised punishment to two years for personal use, six years for growing, possessing or small-scale supply, and as much as life imprisonment for trafficking.
