The Gilbert Islands' Dangerous Drugs Ordinance takes effect
The colonial ordinance for the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, in force from 20 October 1948, controlled Indian hemp alongside raw opium and coca leaf. It bans growing Indian hemp, whether for private use or otherwise, and makes possessing or selling it an offence. It is still in Kiribati's consolidated legislation.
