Bahrain signed a treaty of friendship with Britain on 15 August 1971, ending the protectorate and resuming full sovereignty. The 1959 Control of Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, which banned cannabis and cannabis resin and allowed medical possession only on prescription, stayed in force. The next drug decree, in March 1973, repealed that ordinance and raised the maximum supply penalty to ten years.[1][2][3]
