Vienna meets the Gammler, its first youthful cannabis users

In the late 1960s Austria encountered a new kind of drug user: young, better educated and critical of society, smoking cannabis. Professionals of the time called them Gammler, loafers or beatniks. Cannabis became the country's most-used illegal substance, and the federal institutions that reacted to the Gammler were mostly repressive; broader health, welfare and education measures followed later.[1]
