Police caught Alice Magagula uprooting plants in a dagga field as big as two football pitches; officers counted 9,705 plants. The magistrate gave her four years in prison.[1] On appeal the High Court applied the Phiri sentencing bands: as a cultivating partner expecting a share of the proceeds she faced serious punishment, but only one day's proved participation cut the term to two years, with one year suspended.[1]
