Tightening 🇿🇦 South Africa

South Africa sets 15-year minimum terms for large-scale drug dealing

A new sentencing law required at least 15 years in prison for a first conviction for dealing in drugs, dagga included, worth more than R50,000, or more than R10,000 when done by a syndicate or group, or by any police or other law enforcement officer. A second offence meant at least 20 years and a third at least 25. It was part of a wider law setting minimum sentences for the most serious crimes, eleven years after mandatory minimums for drugs had been abolished.[1]
