A ministerial decree turned the Drug Combating Unit into an independent Drugs Enforcement Administration inside the Ministry of Interior on 26 January 1991. The unit had begun in 1977 as a bureau under Interpol and was renamed the Drug and Alcohol Combating Unit in the early 1980s.
