The Philippines withdraws from the ICC as the drug-war inquiry closes in

President Rodrigo Duterte announced on 14 March 2018 that the Philippines would leave the Rome Statute, and the government deposited its withdrawal notice with the United Nations three days later. The withdrawal took effect on 17 March 2019, but the ICC kept jurisdiction over crimes committed while the Philippines was a state party, from 1 November 2011 to 16 March 2019. The Office of the Prosecutor had already opened a preliminary examination of the drug war, and the withdrawal did not stop the case.[1][2][3]
