The New Zealand Herald reprinted a British doctor's account of a young man who separated hemp seed from parrot food, grew the plants and rolled the leaves into cigarettes. The paper warned that cannabis was 'a most dangerous drug' and that hemp seed in bird food made the plant easy to grow. The story reached New Zealand as foreign medical news, at a time when cannabis use here was still rare.[1]
