Cannabis possession, use, growing and supply without lawful authority came under a national drug-control law that commenced on 6 September 2004.[1] Its combined offence carried up to ten years in prison and a fine of A$50,000; courts later used fines and community service for small cannabis cases.[2][3] The law replaced the earlier dangerous-drugs legislation.[2]
