Iraq's interim government restored capital punishment for specified drug-trafficking offences committed to finance or assist the violent overthrow of the government. The order made an exception to the occupation authority's 2003 suspension and covered the drug law's principal trafficking and aggravated-offence groups. It took effect when issued on 8 August, before publication in September, and commuted death sentences already final before its commencement to life imprisonment.[1][2]
