Death penalty 🇮🇶 Iraq

Iraq's occupation authority suspends the death penalty

The Coalition Provisional Authority suspended capital punishment across Iraq, halting its availability under the drug law as well as other criminal laws. Its order allowed life imprisonment or a lesser lawful penalty where death had been the sole punishment and said the former government had used criminal law to repress people. Iraq's interim government restored death penalties for selected offences in August 2004, including drug trafficking aimed at funding or assisting the violent overthrow of the government.[1][2]
