Morocco starts making hashish in the 1960s

Smoking kif — chopped flowering tops mixed with tobacco — was older, but Moroccan hashish production dates only from the 1960s, following the kif trade.[1] Sifted resin (chira) answered new demand as hippies made Morocco a favoured destination, the 1975–1990 Lebanese war later hit rival supply, and the Rif sat a short crossing from Europe.[1] The new product never gained a local Berber or Darija name.[1] Cultivation has since retreated to the Rif, though it was grown in the Gharb and Haouz plains before independence.[1]
