Police reported the first illegal cannabis cultivation in Ghana in 1960.[1] The herb was called Wee, which E. C. Sagoe reads as a corruption of 'weed' picked up from seamen,[2] and it was smoked only in rolled cigarettes rather than in pipes.[1] The cigarette-only use, with none of the usual pipe paraphernalia, points to a recent introduction rather than a long-established custom.[1]
