The Maldives ended 77 years as a British protectorate on 26 July 1965, when Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir signed the independence agreement with Britain. The country still had no dedicated narcotics statute. The first, Law 17/77, came in 1977 after a man was arrested with 350 g of hashish, as drug use appeared alongside the growth of tourism.[1][2]
