President Muizzu pushes for the death penalty for drug trafficking

President Mohamed Muizzu said on 30 July 2025 that he had asked ministers to review the drug amendment with a view to imposing death on people convicted of smuggling or trafficking drugs. Nine Maldivian and international rights groups urged Parliament to reject the change and to commute the death sentences already in place. The bill had been in committee since February and was not yet law.[1]
