The Knesset passed an amendment to the Mandate's Dangerous Drugs Ordinance that removed clauses barring the cultivation and preparation of the opium poppy, to end dependence on imported medicinal narcotics. It had nothing to do with hashish, but opponents argued against it by pointing to immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries and their supposed disposition to hashish smoking.[1]
