Debate 🇮🇶 Iraq

Iraq's cabinet approves a tougher drug-law amendment

The cabinet approved the first amendment to the 2017 drug law and returned it to parliament after about a year in the State Council. The draft would raise the anti-narcotics directorate's status and, the parliamentary anti-drug committee said, replace life imprisonment with death for large-scale traffickers. Parliament did not pass it; the first reading came only in August 2026.[1][2]
