The Supreme Court upheld the exclusion of appeals already pending on 2 October 2001 from the lighter sentencing rules. Investigations and trials still pending that day could receive the benefit; cases with concluded trials and appeals already filed stayed under the earlier law.[1] The court overruled contrary High Court decisions, reasoning that reopening completed trials could undermine the reform’s aim of reducing delay.[1]
