Tanzania makes life imprisonment mandatory for drug possession and trafficking

Tanzania's Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No.2) Act, 2012 amended the 1995 drug law to require life imprisonment on conviction for possession or trafficking of narcotic drugs, which include cannabis.[1] It replaced the old use and premises provisions with sections 17A and 17B: using drugs, being found in a place used for them, or holding a pipe or utensil carried a fine of one million shillings, ten years in prison, or both, while an owner or occupier who allowed premises to be used, or held preparation equipment, faced life imprisonment.[1] The small-quantity personal-use tier in section 17 remained, with a 200,000-shilling fine or seven years for cannabis.[1] The Act was passed on 16 April 2012, assented on 15 June and published on 27 July.[1]
