The Tajik SSR adopted its criminal code on 17 August 1961. It remained the republic's basic criminal law after independence and was repealed only when the new code took effect on 1 September 1998. The 1974 all-Union drug decree later required Tajikistan, like the other union republics, to amend this code.[1][2]
