Singapore hangs a cannabis offender after a failed stay

Shanmugam Murugesu, a 38-year-old Singaporean, was hanged at 6am on 13 May 2005 after he was found with just over 1 kg of cannabis.[1] On 11 May the authorities rejected a stay application, and his lawyers argued that other men caught with more than 500 g had received prison terms after their charges were reduced.[1] His case drew petitions and vigils, and Amnesty International quoted a local civil-rights group saying it was the first time the local community had taken up the death penalty.[1]
