On 20 January 2022 Parliament replaced the death penalty with life imprisonment, ending a sentence that had been on the books since 1991 but never carried out. The change was made through the Criminal Code (Amendment) Act 2022. Cannabis offences under the 2021 Controlled Substance Act provided fines, prison terms or life, so the abolition did not alter the cannabis penalty scale.[1]
