Panama wins US praise for tougher marijuana measures

Through the 1970s Panama was recognised as a marijuana transshipment point to the United States. In 1973 US officials acknowledged improved Panamanian anti-narcotics measures, including major marijuana seizures, and noted the plant grew abundantly in Panama.[1] Selling carried up to five years in prison, with lighter sentences for possession.[1]
