Richard Burton's 1861 visit to Lagos found diamba smoked in calabash-based water pipes — the only record of cannabis in Nigeria before the Second World War.[1] Lagos was a large diverse port, and the plant-pipe combination most reasonably came from nearby Central Africa or Sierra Leone, though a Brazilian origin is possible: nearby Badagry and Porto Novo traded importantly with Brazil and hosted Afro-Brazilian immigrants expelled after the 1835 revolt, who maintained transoceanic commerce in various plants — but no record says they carried cannabis.[1]
