Debate 🇲🇻 Maldives

Government prepares a bill to carry out death sentences

President Muizzu said a bill to allow executions would go to the People's Majlis in the session due to end in mid-May 2026, and that the state would act once a sentence had exhausted every appeal. Three convicts then had death sentences confirmed by the Supreme Court, and no execution had been carried out since 1954. In May the attorney general said the bill had slipped to the session beginning in June.[1][2][3][4]
