A UN survey finds opium dominates drug use in Laos

A World Health Organization consultant's survey published in the UN Bulletin on Narcotics in 1965 estimated about 50,000 drug users in Laos, almost all of them opium smokers, and said abuse of other drugs had not been noted. It described licensed opium dens left from French rule and annual opium production of about 70 tonnes. The account is an early detailed foreign description of Laos's drug market and records no cannabis problem at the time.[1]
